An Insider’s View: Prague as a Modern MICE Destination

From fascinating history to modern innovation, Prague offers a rare combination for international meetings and events. But beyond the fairytale views lies a city that has made serious strides in infrastructure, services and sustainability to meet the demands of today’s global MICE industry.

In this interview, Roman Muška, Managing Director of Prague Convention Bureau, talks us through Prague’s journey, its future ambitions and the experiences that keep planners coming back.

Prague consistently ranks among Europe’s leading congress cities. What do you think has most contributed to this reputation over the years?

A combination of reliability, creativity and a remarkably strong knowledge base! For decades, the city has balanced world-class infrastructure with an atmosphere that naturally inspires people. Our reputation has been further strengthened by significant improvements to venue technology, the growth of professional services and the city’s increasingly coordinated approach to supporting international events.

Add to that our highly collaborative local industry – universities, research centres, venues and suppliers who genuinely work together – and you get a destination that consistently delivers high-quality events. Ultimately, planners appreciate that Prague is beautiful, yes, but also extremely capable.

How has Prague changed as a MICE city over the last decade?

The main difference is that Prague has transformed from a primarily heritage-driven destination into a modern, innovation-oriented MICE city with a significantly expanded infrastructure. We’ve seen major upgrades across the entire meetings ecosystem: new multifunctional venues, renovated historical spaces equipped with state-of-the-art technology, and a hotel sector that has both grown and diversified its conference capacity.

Many properties have enhanced or expanded their meeting facilities, allowing Prague to host larger, more complex and more creative event formats than ever before. The biggest lesson from this evolution is that success comes from continuous reinvention.

A city cannot rely solely on its charm; it must invest, adapt and think ahead. Prague has embraced this mindset, strengthening its knowledge economy, elevating its service standards and modernising its infrastructure while still protecting the character that makes it unique.

What investments or developments are currently shaping Prague’s future as a MICE destination?

The city is currently undergoing one of its most dynamic periods of investment, both in venues and in high-end hospitality. On the meetings side, large-scale projects such as the revitalisation of the Prague Planetarium and the transformation of the Exhibition Grounds are creating new opportunities for immersive, technologically advanced events. Across the city, cultural, academic and public spaces are also being upgraded to offer more flexible and experience-driven formats for organisers.

Equally important is the rise of the 5-star hotel segment, which is expanding at a remarkable pace. Recent openings such as the Fairmont Golden Prague, W Prague Hotel, and the boutique Sir Prague add not only luxury accommodation but also premium meeting spaces and high-design environments that appeal to top-tier international groups.

These developments signal a clear shift: Prague is preparing for higher-value, more demanding events by offering world-class venues, cutting-edge technology and an elevated delegate experience.

How is the city responding to growing demand for sustainable meetings and events?

Sustainability is now a strategic priority for Prague. The city offers complimentary public transport passes for eligible international congresses, encourages the use of shared transportation and actively works with venues and hotels to reduce waste and energy consumption.

At PCB, we provide practical planning tools that help organisers choose responsible suppliers and design events with measurable environmental goals. An increasing number of Prague venues are pursuing green certifications, investing in energy-efficient technologies and adopting circularity principles, all of which help organisers deliver more responsible events without compromising quality.

The city’s broader climate commitments – aiming for significant CO₂ reduction by 2030 – ensure that sustainability is not a trend but a long-term, cross-sector effort.

What types of social programmes or incentive experiences are especially popular with international groups?

International groups are consistently drawn to experiences that combine authenticity with creativity. Walkable Old Town explorations, private castle and palace events, river cruises and culinary programmes featuring Czech gastronomy are perennial favourites. Increasingly, groups are also looking for immersive, craft-driven activities: brewing or cooking workshops, glassmaking, design tours or behind-the-scenes cultural experiences.

We’re also seeing a rise in interest in contemporary Prague, from street-art walks to modern architecture tours and neighbourhood-focused experiences that reveal the city’s creative side beyond the historic centre. The appeal lies in moments that feel truly “Prague” and allow participants to connect with the city beyond its postcard views.

If you could advise planners using Prague for the first time, what would you tell them to do differently?

I would tell them to embrace the city fully and think beyond the traditional meeting format. Prague rewards creativity – whether that means choosing an unexpected venue, integrating local culture into the programme, or taking advantage of our compact city layout to create walkable, immersive experiences. The biggest mistake is underestimating how much the city can elevate a programme. Lean into Prague’s character and you’ll be surprised by the results.

If you had to sum up Prague in one sentence, what would you say?

Prague is a city where creativity, history and innovation come together to elevate events into experiences that inspire long after they end.
